Battleteam System
Introduction
I’m not afraid. ~ Luke Skywalker
You will be. You will be… ~ Yoda
Welcome, young student. I see you’ve found your way into the Brotherhood and now you seek the power you can feel just…beyond…your…grasp. Good. The pathway to power lies open before you, but do not be fooled, lessons await you, trials beset you, your inner demons may even confront you, but if you succeed, well, there is more here to sate your avarice than you can imagine...
And now, we of the Clan Plagueis give you…The Battleteam System.
Anatomy of a Battleteam
If one is to understand the great mystery, one must study all its aspects, not just the dogmatic, narrow view of the Jedi. ~ Supreme Chancellor Palpatine
A Battleteam (BT) in the Dark Jedi Brotherhood (DJB) is the base component unit used to organize the members of a House and Clan. It serves the House and Clan in competitions, promotes interaction and fun, and it also serves the member in many ways that will allow him or her to advance, be promoted, earn awards, and ultimately enjoy their experience in a more profound way.
Architecture
A BT is comprised of 12 members including the Battleteam Leader (BTL) and two Flight Leaders (FL) or sub-commanders. This limit is fixed and cannot be exceeded, though BTs have been known to operate with far fewer members in lean times. In Clan Plagueis (CP), each House may possess as many BTs as needed to support their membership, however, if this need is not warranted, a general standing of two teams per House is maintained. The approval for additional teams, or the closing of excess teams, must be granted via the Clan Summit and Master at Arms (MAA).
Teams carry titles in accordance with their order alignment, as do their leadership positions. CP’s teams are multi-order and are explained below, but for general knowledge about them, please refer to the Codex. For quick reference, a Sith team is known as a Squadron, a Krath team is known as a Phyle, and an Obelisk team is known as a Brigade. A Sith BTL is known as a Commander, a Krath BTL a Tetrarch, and an Obelisk BTL a Sergeant. Members in a Sith team are known as Flight Members, in a Krath team they are called Tyros, and an Obelisk member is known as a Trooper.
Multi-Order/Order-Specific Teams
Whether you are Sith, Krath, or Obelisk, your order will not restrict you from entrance to any particular team. All teams in CP are multi-order and can and will contain members of all orders to ensure even distribution of the membership and maximum interactivity regardless of the popularity of one particular order over another.
Order-specific teams are simply comprised of members all of the same order. These types of teams may exist in other Houses and Clans of the Brotherhood, but do not exist in CP.
Advancement
Advancement in position is looked on a bit differently in CP as it is not just a “Rank” for the member dossier, but the acceptance of a duty and responsibility to the other members of one’s House and Clan. By seeking a Summit position, the member has made clear that they wish to serve the membership and help lead them to more fun and creative interaction. In order to do so, the current Summits that council such decisions have a duty and responsibility to ensure that the best possible people are chosen for these leadership positions.
One cannot be a good leader if they are not a good follower. By serving in a BT in order to help the House, Clan, and their fellow members, the individual is showing his desire to contribute in a positive way for the good of all. This is something the Summits can look at and see the member’s history of service when deciding on applicants for leadership positions.
Any member desirous of holding offices and leadership positions will need to have a record of service in a BT. Even if an Equite or Elder seeks these positions within CP, they will need to have served in a BT in some fashion preferably as BTL.
The only exception to this would be in the case of a member transferring in from another House, Clan or the Rogues who has served time in a BT elsewhere. Their approval for the position they seek will still ultimately fall to the Summits and appropriate DJB officials.
Rank
The Clan Plagueis Battleteam offers the primary infrastructure necessary for the member to attain elevation in Rank and advancement in Position. Gaining Rank in the Brotherhood, i.e. promotion to DJK, Equite 1-4, etc., does not require service in a BT. These Rank promotions are earned through individual merit of the member and the meeting of specific Clan Promotion Guidelines found on the CP site. If a member chooses to enjoy their time here in the Clan and Club and never desires to set foot in a BT, that is their option and we will not stand in their way.
However, service in a team will certainly enhance the member’s chances of earning these normal Rank promotions especially in the case of Equites. The BTL is instrumental in this process as he is often the first in line of contact with the member and knows them best. His recommendation will carry considerable weight when the Summits decide to promote a member. This will give the member a greater opportunity for promotion as they will have someone who knows them well advocating for them in addition to a Master if they have one.
Competitions
There are several forms of competitions open to a member of a Battleteam. Although non-BT members can enter most competitions, membership in a team is desirable in order to participate in the fun events targeted specifically at BTs.
House, Clan and Club competitions often involve the BT as a unit in order to “fight together” for their respective organization. Competitions known as Battleteam Wars can be held both within a House or the Clan and involve BTs working together in order to complete the challenges and emerge victorious.
Competitions within the teams themselves can also take place in the form of contests run by the BTL that can see the first place winner getting to name the BT motto, rename the BT itself, or otherwise contribute in some tangible way to his team. While creating fictional history, the member is also being awarded Crescents and the like so this system is a very good way to involve the member with the team and promote fun and unity.
It is also required that battle teams show representation in all major competitions. While this should include house and clan competitions, it's mainly directed towards Great Jedi Wars, feuds, and other vendettas. Representation means anywhere from every member to only one or two participating, but each team must have some sort of activty in these departments. Battle Team Leaders are especially asked to participate to set a good example for the rest of the members.
Awards
Service in a team can garner the member many awards. Though simply collecting awards should not be the member’s primary goal, it is a fun way to recognize the work the member has put in that warrants the award. A member in a BT can expect to see Dark Crosses submitted by their BTL as well as the potential for many Crescents and Clusters of Fire earned by participating in the various competitions and gaming events constantly in queue in the Brotherhood.
The Clan Plagueis Consul has initiated a policy that seeks to award members of a Battle Team for their contribution to the Clan. While members not in a Battle Team may earn awards, members within a Battle Team will earn them at a quicker pace.
Admittance to the Battleteam
I don't think they're going to let us in, Artoo. We'd better go. ~ C3PO
Whereas other Clans don’t require anything special of the member for entrance to a BT, CP maintains a set of pre-requisites that are tailored to a member’s order and therefore their interests. The Clan feels that having member’s earn their way into a team will possess them of a stronger sense of pride and unity than all members entering a House simply being assigned randomly.
The pre-requisites are not difficult, but can give the Summits and BTLs an idea as to the member they are considering for acceptance as well as giving the member time to learn his way around the Club before taking the next step in his career.
The member may choose which BT they desire entrance to, but the strength of each team will be taken into consideration by the Summits before final placement is determined. This is done so if one team has 10 members for instance, and the other team only has 8, it would be wise to fill out the under-strength team before admitting more members to the nearly full one.
Once the member decides on the BT, he can email the corresponding BTL and his House Summit for entrance. Upon receiving receipt of the request, he is free to complete the requirements if he has not already done so. If the requirements are complete at the time entrance is requested, the member need simply note such in his mail.
Pre-requisites
SITH
- Earn the rank of ACO
- Complete 3 of the Onderon Campus Tactics and Flight Courses
- Write a short article on why you the member chose your order
OBELISK
- Earn the rank of ACO
- Complete 3 of the Karana Campus Melee/Ground Combat Courses
- Write a short article on why you the member chose your order
KRATH
- Earn the rank of ACO
- Complete 3 of the Deneba Campus Lore and Philosophy Courses
- Write a short article on why you the member chose your order
Upon completion of the pre-requisites the member will be granted entrance and welcomed into the team by its members and BTL. They will then be set upon the path of fun and enjoyment as well as a prosperous DJB career of service if they so choose.
Member Duties
No reward is worth this. ~ Han Solo
As a full member of a BT, there is not an enormous amount of effort expected on the member’s part, but there are a few things asked of them. All leadership positions have a varying level of work expected from them depending on their office, but the basic team member is only expected to participate. By applying for entrance, the member has already expressed a desire to actively participate in accordance with this document and the Clan’s guidance. Below, the primary member duties in a BT are listed, but this does not include things like special projects, etc., the member may be asked to volunteer for in order to help his team.
Have Fun
This is the core foundation of Clan Plagueis and the Brotherhood. If a member’s time here is not fun then there really is no point to spending recreational time here. Given this mandate, the member’s primary goal is to have a good time and enjoy themselves and in turn, make other’s time enjoyable as well.
Support the BT, House, & Clan
The members make up the backbone of all the various organizations within the Club. Without them, there could be no enjoyment, interaction, or progress. If the Club is to perpetuate itself in order to serve the members, then the members need to contribute at least some support. This usually takes the form of simple activity. It could also include requests for members to use their particular talents (graphics, web design, writing, gaming) in order to help their BT, House and Clan with special projects. No one will be cracking any whips, but it would be nice if everyone helped when and where possible.
Interaction
A member will find that the more he interacts with others, the more fun he will have. One must remember that a club is an organization of people that have gotten together under the banner of some common interest and have expressed a desire to share that interest with others. Why else be in a club? No member is required to be the life of the party, but if they remain dormant and don’t participate what are they doing here anyway? If a member remains inactive, they can be removed at the BTLs request.
Competition
As mentioned earlier, competitions are a big part of what the Brotherhood does as they are generally fun and allow members to demonstrate their skills in a variety of ways. BT members will be expected to participate when and where they can in competitions on behalf of their team, House and Clan. This is generally the way that Clan’s are represented to one another: through the actions and successes of their member’s.
While we can’t expect to win everything, we do want to make a good showing of effort and endeavor to do our best. In order to accomplish this goal, the members of the teams (those who have acknowledged that a bit more is required of them than a House member not in a team) must put forth some effort. The way most competitions are run in the Brotherhood generally allows for many points to be earned simply based off participation. A team of all-stars is not required. A team working together is though.
Battleteam Leader Duties
I’m surprised that you had the courage to take the responsibility yourself. ~ Princess Leia
Like any position in the Brotherhood, a BTL will be an individual who desires to serve the other members, promote fun and activity, and offer a measure of leadership to their respective unit. The BTL is the first step for one desirous of greater office within the DJB. This will be the first chance the Brotherhood will get to see the member in action with a fair amount of responsibility on their shoulders. Though this is a fun club for the purpose of recreation, we must not forget that as administrators, we have chosen to serve and as such a little more work is required of us.
Application
Any member desirous of service as a BTL must submit a formal application to the current out-going BTL (if there is one) as well as the House Summit. The application will be reviewed and with approval from the Clan Summit, Master at Arms and any other relevant official, the member can be elevated to this coveted position. Well-deserving candidates, such as sub-commanders or other outstanding individuals may be asked by the Summits to simply take over the BT and be elevated to BTL without need for an application.
Leadership
This is probably one of the most over-used and often abused words in the English language. A position or office does not make one a leader. An individual apparently in charge does not make one a leader. Even the authority granted by an official sanction does not make one a leader. What makes one a leader is that desire within oneself to assume responsibility and take action without the expectation of reward, gratitude, or even acknowledgement. A leader does not do things to draw attention to himself. He does them because they need doing.
BTLs are the frontline in this regard. They will often be one of the first people a new member comes in contact with. As such, the example they set is so critically important that they must always remember to conduct themselves accordingly with not only Club and Clan policy, but with objectivity and fairness to all those they encounter. Rather than being concerned with issuing commands or implementing doctrine, a BTL should endeavor to make friends and show their members the fun to be had in the Brotherhood. If a BTL conducts himself in a mature, fair, and friendly way, the leadership aspect will work itself out. It is only a club after all.
Powers & Abilities
The BTL has all the official power granted him by the DJB as well as the backing and support of the House and Clan Summits of his Clan. At the basic level of leadership within the Club, not many special feats are granted the BTL, but there are a few. The BTL should realize at this stage that everything he does in his official capacity should be communicated to the House and Clan Summits prior to effecting the change.
Abilities granted the BTL may include: changing the BT motto and name, recommending up to and including the Dark Cross, input on the selection of his replacement, selection of his sub-commanders.
Reports & Communication
Every week the BTL will compose and submit a report via the DJB’s report interface for BTLs on the website. A BTL will track and record all of his member’s participation, awards, activities, promotions, currently running and upcoming competitions, etc., for inclusion in the report. Examples can be found on the DJB site or requested from the Summits. Basically this report will serve to highlight member and team accomplishments and things happening within the team as well as let others in the House and Clan know what is going on.
Graphics and HTML skills are not really required, but make for nicer reports. If the BTL needs help or simply wishes to create a more effective and attractive report, he need only ask either his fellow team members, or his Summit. Working together, help is available on nearly any topic.
A good flow of communication is essential on the part of the BTL as well. While certain issues the Summits are working on with the BTL may not yet be ready for general consumption, the BTL is encouraged to pass on all official word to his members and keep them in the loop as much as possible. In this same regard, a BTL should not hesitate to contact his Summit with issues, questions, or ideas either.
Awards & Promotions
As discussed earlier, awards and promotions are a nice way of rewarding the hard work of active members. A BTL will often be the first to see a member’s activity and as such the first to suggest a particular award or even promotion. BTLs are authorized to recommend up to a Dark Cross for their team members, but should first send the recommendation to their House Summit so that they may be kept in the loop and add additional comments to the request.
Recommendation for a promotion should be passed up in the same way. If the BTL feels a certain member has worked hard and met whatever requirements, if any, of their next rank, then they should submit a recommendation to the House Summit as well as the House Envoy. The recommendation will be passed accordingly up the chain of command. It is important for BTLs to work closely with their respective Summits and Envoys so that members do not go unrecognized for their efforts.
Activity
If the general membership is required to be reasonably active, then a BTL should be doubly so. He should promote and maintain activity at all times. Everything the BTL does will be picked up on by his members. If he is active, the members will be active. If he is motivated, the members will be motivated. The converse holds true as well. If the members feel there is a vacuum above them in the BTL spot, they can be become despondent and gain an attitude of indifference. Obviously this sort of attitude can spell the doom of an organization fueled solely by the uncompensated devotion of its members and leaders. If we as leaders are to do the things we enjoy here, we must remain active and involved. It is only fair as so many here spend what little free time their lives afford them here in the Brotherhood.
Competitions
The BTL will also be responsible for running competitions with his team and House or even Clan. He must endeavor to motivate his members to participate in any and all competitions for the enjoyment of all as well as the promotion of team work and pride within the Clan.
Team Website
A team website should be maintained if possible. This is not absolutely required of the BTL, but is a good idea as it creates a more complete sense of the team’s permanence and presence within the club. It will allow them a place to post their ideas, news, and generally just be a positive means of interaction within the team. If the team does not already posses a website, this can be a great opportunity to bring the team together and contribute to its creation. If the BTL needs a website and cannot create one on his own or even with the help of his members, he need only contact his Summits and help will be made available.
Roster
While the roster itself will be maintained for the BTL via the DJB’s website, in conjunction with the House and Clan Envoys, the responsibility of noting member activity or lack thereof falls to the BTL. As the one usually with the highest level of contact with the member, the BTL will often be aware of any and all issues concerning the members requiring attention from the House and Clan.
If a BTL has a member that has become dormant for a period of 1 month or more and has failed to respond to emails, the BTL should contact the House Envoy in order to pass the information up the chain of command so that if any action is deemed necessary, it can be taken.
Projects
The BTL is also responsible for maintaining his BTs history, current fictional standing, as well as overseeing any projects he himself decides to undertake or is asked to complete on behalf of the Summits. Often these things will include the writing of histories, improvement of websites, improvement of pre-existing fictional backgrounds, etc. These types of projects can be very fun and are a great way to involve the whole team.
Battleteam Sub-Commander Duties
I’m not the Jedi I should be. I want more. ~ Anakin Skywalker
A BTL may have up to two sub-commanders, or in the case of the Sith order—Flight Leaders. These are members that aid the BTL with the administration of the team, conduct business in his absence, and generally assist with projects or any other matter that requires attention.
Sub-Commanders, or Flight Leaders, are the next generation of BTLs and future Club leaders as well. They should conduct themselves in accordance with the guidelines set down for BTLs in this system and always strive to improve the experience of the members around them. Service in this position is a great way to learn the skills necessary to make a competent BTL and will be taken notice of especially if the sub-commander is particularly effective.
The Favor of Ommin
Gone to the Dark Side…gone to the Dark Side—as will you, my fine Jedi!
King Ommin of the great walled city of Iziz on Onderon was an old and powerful practitioner of Sith magic. Enlightened by the disembodied spirit of the great Sith Lord Freedon Nadd, Ommin was possessed of immense dark side energy and a pivotal figure in the event known to us as The Freedon Nadd Uprising.
As Ommin once favored the long dead patriarchs Satal and Aleema Keto with his dark side knowledge and amulets of power, so too does he now favor those that impress him with their service to the dark side of the Force.
What It Is
The Favor of Ommin is the Clan Plagueis Battleteam recognition system. It comes from the canonical lore of the Dark Horse Comics series The Freedon Nadd Uprising. It is simply a method the House and Clan use to recognize the current outstanding Battleteam within CP. It is a fictional title the members of the BT hold and are allowed to include in their fiction, message board signatures, graphics, etc.
How It Is Awarded
The Favor of Ommin is awarded to the Battleteam that is deemed the winner of the CP Battleteam Wars that occur from time to time as mentioned earlier in this text. The team that possesses the title will be visually recognized on the main CP site for all to see their supremacy. The title is held until there is another BT War and a new team is victorious. If the defending title holder wins the war, then they retain the title and all the accolades it grants.
Transcending or Leaving the Battleteam
To cheat death is a power only one has achieved… ~ Supreme Chancellor Palpatine
During the course of a member’s career in the Brotherhood it may become necessary, for one reason or another, to move on or leave the Battleteam. Depending on the circumstances, several possibilities or choices are open to the member.
Transcendence
Not to be confused with the Brotherhood power of the same name, transcendence is simply the act of the member honorably completing service in his team and moving up to the next level. This generally occurs for the BTL who has exemplified what it means to be a leader within the DJB and has been selected for his quality to occupy a new position of service.
Parting
This separation can occur in the event the member simply has no more time in their often busy schedules to allow for the proper commitment to his team and Clan. There is no shame in asking to be removed from a team in this fashion and is in fact a show of great honor and courage in the recognition of one’s limitations and devotion to his unit.
Dismissal
Though very rare, it is possible for a member to be removed from the BT, Clan and even Club if their behavior is deemed inappropriate in accordance with Club and Clan rules. This usually will stem from a larger issue involving the member and not normally be something directly related to their position in a BT. It is noted here simply due to the fact that if they are removed from the Club by the Justicar (JST) then obviously they will be removed from the BT.
Award of Service
If a member moves up or on from the team, be it to higher office, the Rogues, or even another Clan, and he has served honorably, he will be accorded an Award of Service in the form of a Dark Cross with the recommendation of his BTL and approval of the Summits.
